The puppies eyes have the slightest little slits...they are just starting to open. They are also beginning to try to walk up on their legs.

All of the puppies weigh over 2lbs now and their dew claws are removed. Their eyes will begin to open later this week. Then they will really melt your heart!

Mama Dog's Treat
Our seven year old son makes mother's milk. That's what we call the special drink we make for our nursing dams. He is very excited about his job; it makes him feel important! He makes this three times a day and carries it out to the whelping box for mama dog. She watches for him to come and starts licking her lips when she spies him. She knows a special treat is coming just for her.
Here is our recipe for mother's milk:
1 Can evaporated milk
1 Can water
2 raw eggs
spoonful of honey (or corn syrup)
1-2 slices of ripped up bread (optional)
Mix all together and then drop in bread. Serve cold with a nice scratch behind the diner's ear once poured.

Pet Prescriptions
Pet prescription costs can be staggering. Let me clue you in on two places that I have found the best prices for these necessary medicines.
1. Pet Health Pharmacy.com ... They custom compound their own drugs and are able to ship directly to you. Overnight shipping is available.
2. Costco... Costco's prescription prices are usually half the price of Wal-Mart. I am always shocked when I call both places for their pricing. Costco carries veterinary drugs, so you do not have to have a vet willing convert the script over to the human equivalent.
Happy Savings!

3 Ways to Slip your Dog a Pill
If you're like me you find yourself occasionally trying to find new and more devious ways to slip your {great dane} dog some medicine without him stubbornly turning his nose at your attempt. I have two standby methods of accomplishing this task.
1. Buy Pill Pockets from Costco. They sell these behind their prescription counter and they work quite well. The drawback is the cost and the special trip to Costco. I have looked for the Pill Pockets repeatedly at Wal-Mart and they do not carry them.
2. Take a 1/2 piece of bread (save the other half for the nighttime pill) and spread a spoonful of peanut butter on it. Push the pill into the peanut butter and fold the bread in half.
But today I created a new idea. This is even better than the pill pocket and quicker than the peanut butter sandwich!
3. Buy a package of hot dogs. Rip off an inch long or so section of the hot dog. Push the pill into meat of the hot dog. The package of hot dogs will last you the whole round of meds this way. Plus, it's so devious and clever and yummy!

Winter Exercise
Feels Good.
Early this morning I looked outside at the bright sunrise and hesitantly opened the sliding door to test the temperature. It seemed crisp and not to cold. I decided to go out for a walk. I knew Baccara would be happy to join me. So I woke her up and off we went. We walked 3.5 miles in one hour, I don’t like to walk too fast because then I don’t enjoy it as much. The sunrise was beautiful and we got to see it for most of our walk.
When I got home I entered the kitchen to find the girls flipping chocolate chip pancakes on the skillet. mmmm!!!
60 minutes and 3.5 miles = 350 calories burned
So, hey… go walk your dane.

Website Updates to See
I’ve been working on updating pictures on my website. On those nice warm days recently I took the danes down by the river and got some great pictures. Go over to the site and check them all out. Click on the “Our Pack” page and then click on the boxes to see each dogs individual page. There are new photos of Anchor, Hadassah, Baccara and Fudge. I meant to get some shots of White Cloud too but the weather got colder and the snow fell, so that might wait until spring.

Recipe... Dane Ice Cream Treats
Almost Frosty Paws “Doggie Ice Cream”
- 32 oz. vanilla yogurt
- 1 large mashed banana (or a large jar of baby food banana)
- 2 Tablespoons of peanut butter
- 2 Tablespoons of honey
Blend together and freeze in small Dixie Cups or plastic “take out” containers. If using Dixie Cups, just peel away the paper and put directly into their food bowl to serve. My dog prefers that they “warm up” for 10-15 min. before serving.

From a book I'm reading...
As we came near our house i could see what looked like three big white sacks of grain hanging from a crossbar at the back of our barn. I jumped off while the bays were making their circle in our yard, and ran around the barn. Our three biggest pigs were hanging there dead, with all the hair scraped off them. It kind of startled me at first, and I guess Father noticed it. He came right over and bent down on one knee beside me. Then he put his arm around my shoulder, and said, "There isn't a thing to be afraid of, or to feel bad about, Son. The only time to feel sorry for anything - or anybody - that dies is when they haven't completed their mission here on earth. These pigs' mission was to get big and fat so as to make food for us. They have done a good job of it and their mission is completed. And I do want you to know this: they didn't know what was happening, and they weren't hurt a bit - they didn't even squeal." Father could always explain things like that so I'd understand.

Way to go Anchor!
Awesome news from the vet today. I took Anchor in to get his hips xrayed and Dr. says they look fantastic.
This is such good news I told the Dr. I could kiss him!
Alas, I restrained myself.
Yay Anchor!
weight 135 lbs at 12 mths old.
